Taking the first step – To Getting Healthy
They say that taking the first step is the hardest and I have found that to be so true. No matter what that step is and what area of your life it applies to, it’s hard. We can talk ourselves out of it before we ever begin. Change is never easy and while sometimes we are so ready for it we can hardly wait but when the hard work begins, then it can become challenging and overwhelming.
Getting healthy can mean a variety of things – diet, exercise, your thoughts, your physical environment, your behaviors, the words you speak, the things you listen to, what you read, and the people you surround yourself with. All these are components of you and your life and your health.
A great place to begin is with awareness of the change you want to accomplish. Its like trying on a new pair of shoes, how do they feel? How do they look? What will they go with in my wardrobe? All these questions and inner dialogue give us insight into the situation.
So rather than getting overwhelmed from the beginning just pick one area of your life you would like to improve upon and get healthier at the same time. I have experienced that when I change one area of my life it often leads to the next and the next. But if I had tried to change all of the areas at the same time I would not have the success I had by taking one at a time.
Today’s world is so busy and complex we need to be gentle with ourselves and allow things to happen with a natural progress and have good support system in place. We all need a support system however that appears to you. It could be one person or five. Don’t be shy in asking for the support you need. You will be amazed how that support will show up when you ask for it.
Asking for help and support can be scary but what I have learned through my years is that what will happen if you DON’T ASK FOR IT? I used to be terrified to ask for help until I realized that the worst answer could be NO but so many times it could be YES but how could I ever discover this unless I asked? I got bold and started asking for a lot of things…not all of them happened for me but at least I knew who would support me and assist me along my journey.
Don’t be AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP.
Change usually does not happen overnight so you will need to be patient with yourself and have realistic expectations. Sometimes things take longer or shorter…who knows but if you have a realistic attitude that will take you a long way and make your journey easier.
Setbacks occur so prepare yourself to have some bad days – we all do and thats a fact of life. If you create a plan how to deal with your setbacks it will again make your path easier and more enjoyable.
Taking these first steps takes determination, courage, faith and hard work. I hope that the above helps you breaks these steps down into manageable tasks.
